Have you seen those who pretend to believe...

"Have you seen those who pretend to believe in what has been revealed to you and what has been revealed before you, how they go in their judgement to the Taghut, though they have been ordered to disbelieve in it. But Satan's wish is to lead them astray"
[Qur'an Surah An-Nisa, Verse:60]

TAFSEER:

Imam Shawkaani, commentated upon this ayah by saying:"In this ayah there is an expression of astonishment, addressed to the Messenger of Allah (saw), at the situation of those people who claim to themselves that they have accepted belief in what Allah (swt) has revealed upon the Messenger of Allah (saw), i.e. the Qur'an, and what has been revealed to the Prophets before him, yet what they have brought contradicts this claim, making it false from its root and showing that they are not on anything at all. Their intention is to make the Taghut the judge among them though they have been ordered in all that Allah (swt) has revealed upon His Prophet (saw) and the previous Prophets (as) to disbelieve in it".

As-Sabooni held a similar view to Imam Shaukani, in his commentary on the beginning of the ayat: "Have you seen those…"

"They want to refer to Taghoot…" As-Sabooni and many other narrators infer this to r
efer to some individuals. In Sahih of Ibn Abbas, it is narrated that Barzal Aslami, a soothsayer, used to judge amongst the Jews, and some of the Muslims went to him for doing so, so Allah (swt) revealed this noble ayah. Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Mundhir and Ibn Abi Hathim narrated that Al-Jilaas ibn Samit (before his tauba), Mo'aqib ibn Kushayr and Raf'i ibn Zayd used to profess Islam. Yet when some of their people, who were Muslim, called them to make the Messenger of Allah (saw) a judge in a dispute, they insisted on calling the soothsayers. In this case the taghut mentioned was a soothsayer called Ka'ab ibn al-Ashraf.

"But Satan…." As-Sabooni comments that Shaitan wants to drive them astray from the Truth and from the Guidance, by things that dazzles them.

COMMENT:

Taghut in the Arabic language is a temple for idol-worship. In the Shari'ah terminology it is an authority which judges in accordance to other than Islam alone. As was the case with Ka'ab ibn al-Ashraf. Today there are many tawaghit. They take the form of individuals who judge by other than what Allah (swt) has revealed. So the ayat is a severe warning that we must not refer to other than Islam for our solutions.

Tawaghit are also present today in the form of systems, institutions and
organisations. Systems such as monarchy, democracy or republicanism. Organisations such as the United Nations (UN) and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) who base all their judgements within International Law and hence nationalism. Or the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank who establish all their transactions based on Capitalism. Or the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) which despite its name does not stand for Islam. Rather it stands for the division of Islamic Land under International Law.

In the Islamic World the Muslims refer to Islam in many matters, such as praying, fasting and marriage. Yet the present rulers of the Islamic Lands refer many other matters, in fact most, to the Tawaghit. This occurs even though they are obliged to disbelieve in it, let alone believing in it and seeking its judgement. So despite many Islamic slogans all the existing rulers seek judgements from the Tawaghit. .

Furthermore though all of the existing rulers claim to be Muslim, most of them actually believe in the Tawaghit. This is despite the fact that Islam itself has judgements in all matters. So it has clear judgements on the matters they refer to the Tawaghit. There are many examples of their violations of Allah's (swt) Deen, of which the following are a selection.

• Examples •

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said,
"Whosoever calls for, fights for or dies for nationalism is not one of us" and he (saw) also said, "If the bay'ah is taken for two Khaleefahs that come to you, kill the latter of them"

Islam with these and other evidences, forbids nationalism, and makes unity of Islamic Lands an obligation (fard). Despite its Islamic front, the Iranian constitution forbids any person other than a Persian from taking the highest authority. Sudan is a member of the United Nations and hence abides by its charter. So it also recognises the so-called International Law, the authority of the UN Security Council, the World Bank and the IMF in making judgements. Similar examples can be brought from the constitutions of every single regime in Islamic Lands. Even though the rulers claim belief in Allah (swt), they seek judgements from other than Him (swt).

This is the nature of all the existing regimes in Islamic Lands. They deserve no loyalty from those who really believe in Allah (swt) and seek His (swt) judgement alone. Those who seek to replace all the Tawaghit with the authority that judges by Islam alone, the Dawlatul Islamiyyah.
